The Heart and Brain Protector

Taurine is considered the most abundant free amino acid in the brain. Even though there are internal mechanisms for taurine production in neural cells, an external supply of taurine is required to meet physiological needs. Taurine is required for optimal postnatal brain development; however, its brain concentration decreases with age. Taurine has been shown to promote the generation of new neurons (neurogenesis) in certain brain regions. This process is critical for brain plasticity and repair. Taurine acts as an antioxidant, helping to protect brain cells from oxidative stress and damage caused by harmful free radicals.  Preliminary research suggests that taurine may have protective effects against certain neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Taurine has been shown to have protective effects on the heart by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, which can help prevent damage to heart cells and tissues. As an antioxidant, taurine helps neutralize free radicals in the body, reducing oxidative stress and its potential damage to blood vessels and the heart. Taurine may help regulate blood pressure levels, potentially assisting in lowering high blood pressure. Studies suggest that taurine may enhance the contractility of the heart muscle, leading to improved cardiac function and pumping efficiency. It has also been associated with lowering levels of LDL cholesterol and has been studied for its potential to inhibit the formation of arterial plaques.

The CARDIAC study – World Health Organization

It started with A global observational study coordinated by the WHO and aptly named the CARDIAC study. Researchers noticed that higher levels of taurine in the urine (indicating higher intake in the diet) were strongly and consistently linked to lower risk of cardiovascular mortality, even after adjusting for other factors like age and BMI. And it seemed to be making a big difference; statistical analysis showed that 42-55% of the variation in ischemic heart disease mortality could be explained by differences in taurine levels.

Taurine offers several potential benefits when taken as a supplement:

Heart Health: Taurine has been studied for its potential to support cardiovascular health. It may help reduce blood pressure and improve overall heart function. Taurine is thought to promote the dilation of blood vessels and reduce oxidative stress, both of which can contribute to heart health.

Antioxidant Properties: Taurine is an antioxidant, which means it can help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. This antioxidant activity may help protect cells from oxidative damage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Neurological Health: Taurine is found in high concentrations in the brain, and it is believed to play a role in neurological function. Some studies suggest that taurine may have neuroprotective effects and could be beneficial in conditions such as epilepsy and neurodegenerative disorders.

Neurological Issues: Research shows taurine supports glutamate and GABA neurotransmission through the modulation of intracellular calcium homeostasis; this balance promotes cognition, even in older age.

Eye Health: Taurine is present in high amounts in the retina of the eye. It may help protect the eyes from oxidative damage and contribute to overall eye health. Some research has explored taurine’s potential role in preventing and managing certain eye conditions.

Metabolic Health: Taurine has been studied for its potential to support metabolic health. It may help regulate glucose metabolism, improve insulin sensitivity, and help maintain a healthy body weight.

Liver Health: Taurine may have a protective effect on the liver and is sometimes used as a supplement to support liver function. It may help reduce liver damage caused by various factors, including alcohol consumption and toxins.

Mood and Stress Management: Some research suggests that taurine may have a calming effect on the nervous system and could potentially help reduce stress and anxiety. It may also play a role in regulating mood.

Regulation of Minerals: Taurine helps regulate the balance of minerals, such as calcium and potassium, in cells, which is crucial for various physiological processes.

Immune System Support: Taurine has been shown to modulate immune function and may help support a healthy immune response.

Seek advice from your doctor before use if you have any pre-existing or chronic medical condition, are under 18 years old, or on any prescription medication. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing. Discontinue use and consult your doctor if any adverse reactions occur.
